Ice is pretty inexpensive, right?
It is when you don't need much, or not often. Lets look at a scenario and figure out what ice actually costing you.
A hypothetical situation...
You own a local eatery in town, and require ice every day. You don't have an ice machine in the eatery, so you purchase bags of ice locally. What is ice actually costing you compared to if you leased an ice machine?
A typical bag of ice is 7-10 lbs and average cost is approximately $4.98.
To keep things simple, lets do this calculation based on 10lb bags at $5.00 a bag.Your eatery (and even the most basic eatery) uses 400lbs minimum of ice per day.
- 40 bags / 400lbs = $200.00 a day
- 6 days a week = $1,200 a week
- 4 weeks =$5,200 per month
- 12 months = $62,400 per year
What if you purchased or leased a commercial ice machine?
Owning |
Leasing |
|
---|---|---|
Startup Cost | A typical 400-500lb ice machine cost $5,300 + $500 for installation. $6000 |
$245 x 2 (1st & last months lease). $490 |
Annual Maintenance Cost | $500 - $550, two to three times a year ($1,650) + filters ($600) = $2,250 |
$0 (it's covered) |
Per 7 years | $20,500 - $25,000 | $20,580.00 |
So what's the difference? | Money: Large amount down and sporadically for the lifetime of the unit. Money out of your pocket (usually at the worst times). Maintenance: Sweating everytime you call a service company how much its going to cost to fix. |
Money: Budgeted amount every month and everything is taken care of. Priority service, reimbursement for ice if you are down longer than 24 hours. Maintenance: Calling the lease company to get free service. |
There is quite a difference in owning vs. leasing!
The cost of ice adds up quickly, but leasing an ice machine takes the stress and effort out of the situation, and keeps costs predictable and consistent.
